Mercedes-Benz SL Class Prices: What Low Mileage Is Worth at Auction
Mercedes-Benz SL Class cars under 30,000 miles sold for a median 57.67% more than higher mileage cars of the same model year and trim on Bring a Trailer.
The short version. On Bring a Trailer, Mercedes-Benz SL Class cars with under 30,000 miles sold for a median of $47,016 across 17 sales. Cars with 30,000 miles or more sold for a median of $31,500 across 35 sales. Those are raw medians. After matching on model year and trim, the conservative figure is 57.67% more for the lower mileage cars. That is an association, not a cause.
What we compared
We split recorded Bring a Trailer sales of the Mercedes-Benz SL Class into two groups: under 30,000 miles, and 30,000 miles or more. The sales cover 2026-08-08 to 2026-10-03.
The prices are hammer prices of recorded sales (final bids), not asking prices. A chart of the figures accompanies the post. It shows the unmatched medians, with n = 35 and 17 sales.
Why the raw medians are not the answer
The raw gap compares two groups that may not contain the same kinds of cars. A low mileage group could hold newer or better equipped versions, and that would widen the gap by itself.
To reduce that problem, we compared cars within the same model year and trim. That gave 12 model year and trim groups. Two ways of combining the groups gave two results. Weighting across the matched groups gave 70.6%. Taking the plain median of the groups, where each group counts once, gave 57.67%.
We lead with the smaller figure, 57.67%, because it is the more conservative one. The 95% interval on the effect runs from 55.69% to 87.26%.
How the finding held up
The finding passed the interval, false discovery, holdout and robustness checks of the Trends desk. We say so, and nothing stronger.
Two of those checks are worth seeing in numbers. Split by time, the effect was 50.32% in the earlier half of the sales and 112.43% in the later half. The direction is the same in both halves, but the size differs a lot, which is a reminder of how small the samples are.
With the highest sale in each group removed, the effect was 60.34%. One unusual sale does not explain the result.
What the numbers cannot show
This is an association in recorded hammer prices, not a cause. Mileage may travel with other things buyers pay for, such as condition, history or how a car was presented, and these figures cannot separate them.
Trims and options inside a model are not matched. Matching covers model year and trim only, so part of any move can be a change in which versions sold. Options, colour, service records and condition are not controlled.
The sample is small: 17 sales in one group and 35 in the other, from one source. Bring a Trailer is only one venue, and results from other auction houses or marketplaces could differ. These are hammer prices of recorded sales, not asking prices, and they say nothing about cars that did not sell or were never listed.
The data covers recorded sales from the sources we track, updated nightly, over a window of about two months. It does not describe other periods, and it does not say where prices will go.
