How a sale is recorded
Each night we read the results published by the major auction houses and marketplaces we track. For each car we store the title, the year, make and model, the price, the sale date, the mileage when published, the location, a photo link, the source, and the link to the original listing. A row with no title, link or make is rejected, as is a sale date in the future.
A lot that ended without meeting its reserve is not a sale, and neither is a high bid. Only a published result counts.
Credit and links
Each sale and listing credits its source by name and links to the original page at the venue: the Recent sales table, the matches in your watchlist, the biggest sales on This week and each dot on a price chart. Photos belong to the venues and link back to them.
What is not shown
- The venue's description. Auction houses write a paragraph about every car. That paragraph is theirs and never appears here. We write one short line in our own words from the facts: mileage, engine, gearbox, colours, location.
- Dealer prose. From a dealer's website we show facts and a photo only.
- Delisted as sold. A listing that disappears from a dealer or marketplace is marked delisted. It is never recorded as a sale.
- Non car lots. Parts, manuals and memorabilia are kept out of search, charts and stats.
Asking prices
Asking prices on the For sale now tab are as listed by the seller. Dealer fees, taxes and shipping are not included. An ask is compared with the median of recorded sales, and it never counts as a sale.
Prices
Prices are the results each venue published. Online auctions generally publish the hammer price; the traditional houses generally include the buyer's premium. Taxes and fees are never included. Other currencies are converted to US dollars.
What none of it is
Motivyn is not a licensed appraiser, broker or financial advisor. Nothing on the site is an appraisal, and no figure should be the sole basis for a purchase. The data comes from public sources and may contain errors. Past sale prices do not guarantee future value. The full wording is in the Terms of Service. If a sale looks wrong, the flag on each search row reports it.
